Summer Splashes

Thinking of summer − and of splashing − reminded me of the river that ran behind the farm home of my youth. I would take my shoes off and cross the river at random places to get to the base of the mountain on the other side quicker than walking to the only bridge. I loved it when the cool water splashed up onto my shorts, arms and sometimes my face.

That “splash” of a pleasant memory is the opposite of a brief trigger moment. Many of us seeking early recovery or in long-term recovery have splashes of moments that remind us of our past history of drinking or using. What if when those trigger moments came, we switched our thoughts to a splash of fun time at the pool, at the beach, near a lake, or at the river?

As a wise soul once said, we go to what we focus on. Let’s focus on our positive splashes.

LifeRing Secular Recovery is all about making positive recovery connections to feel supported by others with similar lived experiences. During our meetings, we celebrate and reinforce what went well for us during our weekly or daily activities. Perhaps during your week, you noticed a splash of sunlight peeking through a doorway or through some trees. Maybe water splashed up while you engaged in self-care while taking a relaxing bath. If it rained nearby, you may have noticed summer raindrops as they splashed on your windshield. Wherever you find your splashes of positive reinforcement, try to take notice of them. Simple moments and splashes of summer joyfulness.
